How the Map Works

Type an address in the map's search box to zoom in on a particular eatery, manually zoom into an area of interest with double clicks, narrow your search to a particular grade of restaurant by choosing one of the grade-specific maps listed immediately below the map, and at any time click on a circle to see the details of the restaurant it represents

The Data

The grades listed on the map come from health inspections conducted by the San Francisco City Government Health Department. The data is available at the city's open data catalog. The lowest grade a restaurant has received in the past three years is the one listed on the map for it. So, restaurants with A grades have received consistently high inspection scores over the past few years while eateries with lower grades may have recently improved, but not yet had this reflected in their grades on the map
